Beyond trust and rapport: The untold benefits of empathic communication for patients and clinicians
Presentation for the Australian Physiotherapy Association Pain Interest Group.
The aim of this lecture is to draw attention to the benefits of utilizing empathic communication strategies – not only to build trust and rapport with patients, but to help patients to engage with non-pharmacological pain care, on the one hand, and help clinicians to navigate emotionally challenging patient encounters, on the other.
These two consequences of empathic communication have implications for both patient outcomes and clinician wellbeing.
